The Gear VR is a great way to get into virtual reality at a relatively low price point. But as with all tech, it can run into issues and crash. While this is a frustrating issue, there are a few things to do before contacting customer support.

Here's what to do if your Gear VR is crashing.

Detach phone and reattach it

This is the most basic solution but it fixes the issue more often than you might think. If your Gear VR is freezing or crashing you can try detaching your phone from the headset wait a few seconds for your phone to switch back to phone mode and then try using your Gear VR again. If your phone feels hot in your hand when you detach it, then you'll want to give it a few minutes to cool back down before jumping back into VR.

Force stop Oculus Home app

Next up is force stopping the Oculus Home app. This completely stops it from running and then let's you start it up again, essentially restarting the app by force.

  1. Open the Settings menu.
  2. Search for Apps.
  3. Select Apps with the four orange circle icons.
  4. Select App manager.
  5. Scroll down to Oculus Home and select it.
  6. Hit force stop.
  7. Select force stop on the warning prompt.

This is a good way to deal with apps crashing in general and might solve your issues with the Gear VR.

Clear Oculus Home cache

Another solution is to clear the cache of Oculus Home. This will delete some of the data you've entered for your Gear VR but you can enter that again. The steps are very similar to force stopping the app.

  1. Open the Settings menu.
  2. Search for Apps.
  3. Select Apps with the four orange circle icons.
  4. Select App Manager.
  5. Scroll down to Oculus Home and select it.
  6. Select Storage.
  7. Select clear cache.

Uninstall Oculus app and plug in phone

If none of these work you can basically start over from scratch by deleting the Oculus apps from your phone and the plugging your phone back into the Gear VR. This will let you set up your Gear VR again.

Uninstalling apps varies a bit based on your launcher. In some launchers you hold down on the app icon until you see an option to uninstall the app. Alternatively you can follow these steps.

  1. Open the Settings menu.
  2. Search for Apps.
  3. Select Apps with the four orange circle icons.
  4. Select App Manager.
  5. Scroll down to the app you want to delete and select it.
  6. Select uninstall.

After you've done this you can set up you Gear VR again. Here's our guide if you need a reminder.
